Marzocchi Bombers Z3
By James Murnaghan

Following the theft of my forks and virtually everything from my bike (except the frame) while on holiday in Wales last summer, I was forced into replacing my basic but effective Manitou Spyder forks. At the time I was angry and frustrated but since then I have come to appreciate the result of this incident had been generally positive, giving me an excuse to replace my forks with some legendry Bombers.

Since I have been reading Mountain Biking Magazines, Marzocchi Bombers have always been a favourite of reviewers, having owned a pair of Z3s for just over 6 months now I realise why. These forks have all the hallmarks of a quality build and they give a superb ride but at a reasonable price.

My first ride with my gleaming new forks was the South Downs Way in September 1999 and from the start they performed like nothing else I'd ever ridden, with a plush ride soaking up both the undulating trail and the rocky and chalky descents of the South Downs. As our ride went on I became much more confident on rockier descents, knowing that the Z3s would absorb the shocks allowing for a speedy and comfortable ride.

Since then I have had no problems with the forks at all and despite being supplied without boots they require very little cleaning or maintenance and when this is required it is all very straightforward. My 1999 forks were supplied in silver and are disc brake compatible, I believe the 2000 model is Red and is also disk brake compatible.

My advice if you are looking for some new suspension forks is seriously consider Marzocchi Bombers Z3 or any others in their wide range, if I was buying a suspension fork today I would not consider anything else! Another point is shop around; some of the ads on the web and in bike magazines offer some very good deals on forks and last year's models are often drastically reduced.
